Nicholas McLeman

Senior manager, tax investigation specialist

Nick is a senior specialist in tax investigations and dispute resolution, with more than 13 years’ experience supporting clients through complex HMRC enquiries. As a former HMRC investigator, he understands how the department works and uses this insight to help corporate and private clients achieve the best possible outcome.

He is a board member of the Contentious Tax Group, a UK wide association of senior tax dispute professionals. As part of this role, he works with HMRC consultation teams and contributes to development of legislation and policy.

Nick advises on all types of HMRC intervention across the full range of taxes, including voluntary disclosures, COP9, COP8 and technical disputes. He also works proactively with clients to identify and address risks before HMRC raises questions.

He works closely with leading tax counsel and has supported successful First-tier Tribunal cases, including Daniel Witton v HMRC [2025]. Recent work includes overturning a VAT Personal Liability Notice and successfully challenging HMRC’s attempt to deregister a client from VAT under the Ablessio principle.

Outside work, Nick is a director of Friends of Rodney Road CIC, where he supports community and environmental projects. He is also a keen musician and enjoys producing and performing music.
