Payroll: What really happens

A calendar and a laptop are positioned on a desk, with an individual holding a pen in one hand while pointing at the laptop screen with the other.

As part of National Payroll Week, one of our clients, MVV Environment, has shared their experience of working with FC Payroll Solutions.

This week marks National Payroll Week which was established in the UK in 1998 to celebrate the payroll profession and to give it the recognition it deserves.

So, I thought this was an ideal opportunity to let you see what happens ‘behind the scenes’ with MVV Environment’s payroll.

Our annual salary bill across the MVV UK companies is in excess of £7 million. There are four separate payrolls, one for each company, which are reported and managed separately. Everyone looks forward to receiving their payslip each month, but a lot of work takes place to make sure this happens on time and that everything is correct.

We work with a payroll bureau to process our monthly payrolls. For several years now we have used FC Payroll Solutions and we work very closely with Julie Knight, our payroll administrator. To be honest, we couldn’t do it without Julie’s enthusiasm, professionalism and her encyclopedic knowledge of all the complex payroll and HMRC rules and regulations.

Each month we send Julie a list of all the payroll changes or variable data – overtime, new starters, leavers, salary changes, promotions, pension contributions etc. Although many MVV UK employees are salaried and their pay doesn’t vary from month to month, we still average 20 different salary changes and overtime for almost 100 employees each month.

Julie checks a portal on the HMRC website and downloads any tax code changes which are to be applied to individual salaries. She then calculates the individual net (after tax) payment for each employee and sends the figures to us for a final check. Once everything is approved, she produces payslips, uploads them to the MyePayWindow portal, prepares reports for our Finance team and for HMRC, makes our PAYE, National insurance and pension contributions and (perhaps most importantly!) sends the salary payment via BACS to each employee’s bank account in time for pay day.

So, when you download your payslip later this month, here is the lady who makes sure it’s all done properly …
