Kirsty Martin

Manager, VAT and customs

Kirsty is currently helping independent schools adjust to the introduction of VAT on school fees. She provides advice on partial exemption, pre-registration VAT recovery, capital goods scheme items, while also delivering bespoke relevant VAT training.

Kirsty enjoys advising charities with complex structuring and compliance issues. She ensures the correct VAT treatment of their income to certainty in VAT recovery of costs. This includes business/non-business and partial exemption calculations. Her work ensures trustees can be certain that their organisations are VAT compliant.

Kirsty has a wealth of experience having worked in VAT and customs for 30 years. She began her career at the HM Customs and Excise advice centre before moving into VAT compliance. There she gained her extensive knowledge working with all sizes and types of business. She was also a tax specialist client relationship manager for large businesses, specialising in local authorities and section 33 bodies. In addition to being a senior assurance visiting officer at HMRC, Kirsty also specialised in labour providers and appeals and reviews. She gained invaluable insight and experience at dispute resolution, which she has since successfully utilised for clients.

At PKF Francis Clark, Kirsty has taken the opportunity to assist businesses with international trade, imports and exports, helping them save costs and ensure compliance post Brexit. Despite the challenges, she enjoys providing clear succinct answers and giving businesses the confidence to focus on trading in this complex arena.

Kirsty has a Level 4 distinction Advanced Customs Compliance and is a Member of Chartered Institute of Export.
